Peppermint Ice Is Here: Screenshots Included
After tons of popularity surrounding the Peppermint OS release last month, today Cloud lovers get a treat in the first release of Peppermint Ice, version 07142010. This Peppermint project was developed around the Chromium web browser and a new SSB or Site Specific Browser developed by Kendall Weaver aka “Ice”. This is where Peppermint Ice got its name. If you want to compare Peppermint Ice to Peppermint OS One, I did a Peppermint OS One screenshot review last month you might find useful.
It’s hard not to be excited about the whole Cloud idea because it really does lend an advantage on the hardware side of things. Take a look at the hardware requirements for this Peppermint Ice release. You must have an i386 or better processor, 192 MB RAM, and 4 GB of hard drive space or better.
Here’s some highlights from what’s going on behind the scenes Pcmanfm 0.9.7m, Openbox 3.4.11.2, Xorg 1.7.6, and Lxsession 0.4.3.
A note in the official Peppermint Ice release announcement states that “The default Cloud Applications are simply included in Peppermint Ice as an example of the flexibility of the Peppermint Ice SSB as opposed to locally installed applications.”
Here are some of the Cloud applications found out-of-the-box in Peppermint Ice. Editor by Pixlr , Facebook, Hulu, Last.FM, Pandora, Seesmic Web, The Cloud Player, YouTube, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Mail, and Google Reader. This is quite a convenience for most but as the release statement mentions these can be easily removed and added back whenever you see fit. Here are some of the locally installed applications found out-of-the-box. Chromium, Drop-Box, Xnoise, Ice, X-Chat, and Transmission.
You can download the 416 MB .iso file or buy Peppermint OS in our cart.
I tinkered around for awhile in Peppermint Ice just as I did with the June release of Peppermint OS. I found it even more enticing than the previous version. I enjoyed doing stuff like using the Ice SSB to make my own menu link, choose the icon, etc. This was something I’d never done before. The whole Cloud feel is new to me, maybe that’s why I was so impressed. You can see this in the final screenshot of the gallery. Enjoy these Peppermint Ice screenshots that include the live cd, installation, menu, and popular applications of the new Peppermint Ice-07142010.
