OpenSUSE 11.3 LXDE Screenshots
Need something to play with over the weekend? The OpenSUSE 11.3 release is the first ever to include the OpenSUSE LXDE flavor. LXDE version 0.5.5 is included on the OpenSUSE DVD along with other desktop options KDE, GNOME, and XFCE. LXDE 0.5.5 is integrated into OpenSUSE along with Lxdm 0.2.0 is the default Login Manager, Pcmanfm 0.9.7 has been completely rewritten to have GVFS and Trash support, LXDE Control Center and Lxdm-conf configuration tool are included by default and Brasero works without GNOME dependencies.
I tested this one for only a few hours on both a virtual machine and on my older Dell desktop that I have been running Lubuntu 10.04 on. I found the OpenSUSE 11.3 LXDE flavor to look and run great however I didn’t find some of the incredible navigation speeds I have with Lubuntu. One of the things I love about lightweight distributions is the navigation around the desktop is so snappy. OpenSUSE 11.3 LXDE has some of this but isn’t as fast as some others I’ve tried. In comparison to OpenSUSE 11.3 KDE and GNOME versions I’ve tried, the LXDE flavor is the clear winner for speed and If you’re trying to take advantage of OpenSUSE’s features but don’t want all the bloat, this might be an option. Don’t forget to check out my full OpenSUSE Review for screenshots of the GNOME and KDE flavors.
