WattOS: Lightweight, Low Energy
WattOS is a lightweight Linux distro based on Ubuntu and optimized to use less energy. The focus of WattOS is to bring fast effective tools for work and for play on low resource computers and recycled systems. I
used WattOS this morning for quite awhile and was very impressed. Different versions of WattOS run GNOME, XFCE, Openbox/LXDE and a server version exists with no GUI. I tested the Openbox/LXDE version known as Microwatt which was the beta 3 release of the distro. My excellent first impression was based on a combination of speed and the nice green graphical theme that WattOS has. I found it to be very fast and very feature filled due mostly to excellent applications options like Pidgin, Brasero, and Exhaile. The system was definitely a stripped down version but provided a good base to build on without the bloat of too many applications and tools I’ll never use. The applications included everything I needed. This won’t apply to everyone but that’s why WattOS is so easy to build on. One tool that WattOS offers, that I would use, is the optional WattOS power management application which allows for the customization of power management on your computer or lets you use the WattOS options. This could be a big hit with users managing many computers. I look forward to trying the GNOME and XFCE versions of WattOS as my experience with this release couldn’t have been better.
