Understanding Mandriva 2010 Editions
Throughout the next few days we’ll be looking into the Linux distribution Mandriva 2010 which was recently released. Mandriva is a great distribution to use if you’re just starting out with Linux. You can buy Mandriva on DVD for under $6 or download it if you have the connection speed. Mandriva KDE, GNOME and XFCE Linux CDs are avialable but the DVD includes all 3 graphical environments. As always, Mandriva Linux 2010 comes in several different editions. Although these editions are built from a simple concept they can be confusing for newbies. Here’s a definition of each Mandriva Linux 2010 edition.
Mandriva Linux Free – This version is free for anyone to download like most Linux distributions but is also named “Free” because it consists entirely of free and open-source software.
Mandriva Linux One – This edition includes non-free software packages which may provide more of an application selection but is not the purest form and does not conform to the rules of open-source.
Mandriva Linux Powerpack – The mandriva 2010 Powerpack is the commerical distribution of Mandriva Linux. It includes non-free packages and drivers which, in the end, may help add value for the user. The Powerpack includes features you can’t find in the Free and One editions. The Mandriva 2010 Powerpack includes Mandriva Smart Desktop, a 3 month period of web support, exclusive software, and other various Mandriva tools.
Tomorrow we’ll be looking a little deeper into specific versions of Mandriva 2010 and examine the installation, desktop, interface and more.
